Unlocking and Storing Your Car’s History

Even the biggest car enthusiast can struggle to understand their car’s history. For most, the car only begins to matter the moment it is purchased from a dealership or from another owner. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. Your car has a secret past, and it’s time you found out.

Key Certificates & Data Points

During the lifetime of your car you may be tracking the mileage or service history, and for some they even have kept records on what was done prior to their ownership. But where are these stored? Do you have all the records going back to the day the car is built? Below we list a few of the key certificates and other critical data points for your car and you can see just how much you truly know about your car.

Type Approval (TA) data
Data about a particular type of vehicle that is presented to the approving authority. This involves hundreds of data items that become available after the vehicle has been developed and tested but before the first vehicles of this model are produced.

Certificate of Conformity (CoC) data
The certificate must be supplied by the manufacturer prior to the initial registration of each individual vehicle. CoC data includes data specific to the vehicle, such as the VIN, colour of the vehicle and the exact value for the specific vehicle aspects such as weight & emissions.

Vehicle Registration (VRD) data
Vehicle Registration Data is a subset of the CoC, recorded when the vehicle is first registered in the national vehicle register. This data can change from country to country based on national legislation and not just reflecting the vehicle’s technical capabilities. Additionally, the VRD will track some modifications, although which ones need to be registered or installed by certain providers depends on each country.

Inspections and Repair data

Repair and Maintenance (RMI) data and Periodic Technical Inspections (PTI) data are both specific technical vehicle data used to support maintenance and vehicle inspections. Manufacturers can be responsible for sharing certain data points directly to those completing the inspections.

Registration Certificate/Holder data
Specific information about who the vehicle is registered to. This includes: name, date and place of birth, ID and address. This data is used for tax and insurance purposes and also the enforcement and collection of any traffic or parking fines and unpaid tolls.

Vehicle status data
Used to record a range of status changes, this data set tracks whether a car has been; stolen, licence plate stolen, vehicle scrapped, registration terminated, admission to the road suspended until further inspection, vehicle exported. These statuses are relevant for the re‐registration of the vehicle and for traffic enforcement.

Inspection results and mileage
Related to the PTI, this registers the results of a vehicle inspection related to the vehicle identification, braking system, steering equipment, windows and mirrors, lights, axles‐wheels‐tyres, chassis, equipment (safety belts, airbags, etc.), noise and emission values, and other aspects..

These are just a few of the various in-depth certificates and processes that track all the information about your vehicle. If you were asked to provide the data on your current vehicle, how much of it would you be able to show today?
